The study proved that wearing the AQx Aquatic Training Shoes increased VO2 by 4.12mL · Kg-1 · min-1 at any given water treadmill speed. The study also found that Heart Rate was approximately 7bpm less during water treadmill running compared with land treadmill running, although the metabolic demand (VO2 ) was similar. Water Treadmill Parameters Needed to Obtain Land Treadmill Intensities in Runners. Med. Sci. Sports Exerc., 42(4), 733-738.

ABSTRACT

RIFE, R. K., J. W. MYRER, P. VEHRS, J. B. FELAND, I. HUNTER, and G. W. FELLINGHAM. Water Treadmill Parameters Needed to Obtain Land Treadmill Intensities in Runners. Med. Sci. Sports Exerc., Vol. 42, No. 4, pp. 733-738, 2010.

Purpose: To establish water treadmill running parameters with shoes (WTR-S) and without water shoes (WTR-NS) needed to obtain known land treadmill running (LTR) cardiorespiratory responses.

Methods: Eighteen trained college-aged runners participated in three running conditions (LTR, WTR-S, and WTR-NS) where cardiorespiratory responses were measured. The primary variables of interest were V 0 2 , HR, treadmill speed, and stride frequency (SF). These variables were assessed at 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80% equivalents of land V 0 2 m a x for all three running conditions.

Results: Data were centered; so in the analysis, intercepts were calculated within the range of data. At an HR of 150 bpm, V 0 2 was significantly less (P < 0.05) during LTR (34.6 mL-kg- 1min- 1 ) compared with WTR-S (37.5 mL-kg- 1 min- 1 ) and WTR-NS (37.2 mLkg- 1 min- 1 ) . HR was approximately 7 bpm less during WTR compared with LTR, although the metabolic demand (V02 ) was similar. At a treadmill speed of 160.9 m·min-1, SF during LTR was 23.6 strides per minute greater (P < 0.05) than that during WTR-S and 21.8 strides per minute greater than that during WTR-NS. Wearing water shoes increased V 0 2 by 4.12 m L · kg- 1€min- 1 at any given water treadmill speed.

Conclusions: To achieve metabolic oxygen demands equivalent to intensities from 50% to 80% of V 0 2 m a x on LTR, WTR parameters have to be changed from those used on LTR. WTR is an effective alternative to LTR. Subjects were able to exercise on the water treadmill at intensities equivalent to 80% of their V 0 2 m a x and 55% to 94% of their land H R m a x . Individuals can select a treadmill speed during WTR that elicits an HR of approximately 7 bpm less than their LTR to obtain a cardiorespiratory overload equivalent to 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80% of their land V 0 2 m a x .

Key Words: CARDIOVASCULAR TRAINING, REHABILITATION, LOWER EXTREMITY, RUNNING

AQx Facebook 500

Fans of AQx!

We have a challenge for you and your online network with some AQx gear to giveaway! She hosts a 12 week Aqua Boot Camp and various other water running clinics. She also privately works with clients both runners and non-runners. “I have a lot of success,” says Heidi, “especially with clients getting back their muscular conditioning after different joint injuries.” Heidi is an ACE Certified Group and Personal Trainer, is certified by the Aquatic Exercise Association, and is certified by the Midwest Aquatic Fitness Association.

Heidi became interested in AQx after attending one of Pauline Ivens’s “Just Running” workshops which highlight the AQx system. After the workshop she “did all of the research that I could to find out about Dr. Killgore. I was impressed, intrigued and wanted more. I did everything that I could on my own studying and working on the technique.” Next, Heidi traveled to Orlando, Florida to the International Aquatic Fitness Conference where she met and trained with Dr. Killgore to become an AQx Master Trainer. “He was absolutely amazing.”

Heidi not only uses AQx to train others, she also uses the AQx system to assist in her own running endeavors. Years ago, Heidi incurred an injury in her knee and her “muscle tone never fully recovered because of continuous pain…I could only run a few miles in pain and averaged just over a ten minute mile pace.” Then she got into the water with AQx and improved her conditioning. “Now I am signed up for my first marathon in May! I completed my first two half marathons last year at about a 7:40/mile pace."

Here is what other people have to say about Heidi:

"Heidi Meyer-Spidell has taken the knowledge acquired through AQx and used it to positively impact our members in general. Her skills also give our organization a competitive advantage. On an individual bases she has aided members working through injuries that have allowed them to successfully return to their recreational activities. We truly appreciate the impact Heidi has had on our members.” --Mike McMahon, Owner/President Pinnacle Health + Fitness

“I came to Heidi two years ago after suffering several years of knee pain from running. I decided I had to reduce my mileage, but I needed other cross-training opportunities to compensate for the reduction. I am a terrible swimmer, so that really wasn't an option. Fortunately, Heidi's deep water running training has helped me fill that void with a tremendous non-impact workout. My knees have been largely pain-free in the past two years. Heidi's training helped me complete my first marathon and simultaneously qualify for Boston. I can't say enough about Heidi's personal approach. She has taken a true interest in my goals and is helping me attain them.” --Tim McCauley

“I am new to water running and I absolutely love it! It has helped me with my stride and my endurance! Heidi pays close attention to everyone's form and encourages you to work harder. I look forward to her class every week!” --Teresa Christianson

“Honestly, I was skeptical at first with the idea of "water running", only because I did not know much about it. Now, being a seasoned "water runner", I am truly amazed by this program! I considered myself in very good shape before this program, but now I am a faster and stronger runner because of this program, and because of my trainer, Heidi Spidell. Heidi is so 'tuned in' to when you have reached your individual plateau; she does not back down when it's time to push forward in your water running training. I know this is something I can do the rest of my life--injury free! Thanks Heidi!” --Kim Vandivier

Linfield Faculty & Staff AQx Class

As a part of two Linfield College Seniors' graduation requirements, AQx has been hosting an evening exercise class open to all Linfield Faculty and Staff. The New Year is often the time for new commitments and “resolutions” and the desire is to maintain those goals throughout the year. AQx Aquatic Training Shoes (ATS), the Zero Gravity Suit (ZGS) and these two unique workouts can boost your winter workouts and add variety to your New Year’s resolution workout plan.

Workout #1: Deep Water Intervals

This unique deep water training routine developed by AQx helps improve speed and conditioning just like land-based intervals. The advantage of using the pool to complete these intervals is to reduce the impact forces your body encounters during land-based intervals and with the AQx aquatic training shoes delivering a 9% increase in caloric expenditure (compared to barefoot in water); your workout becomes a fat burning routine that will satisfy your New Year’s resolutions.

1. Warm-up: Deep water running for 10 minutes (May include some light shallow water drills)

2. Deep Water Routine: Sprint Intervals
3x 45 sec "hard"/ 30sec "easy"
2 min recovery
3x 1 min "hard"/ 1min "easy”
2 min recovery
3x 30 sec "hard"/ 30sec "easy"

3. Cool-down: Deep water running for 10-15 minutes

Workout #2: Shallow Water

This unique shallow water training routine developed by AQx helps to improve speed, strength and agility. AQx’s aquatic training shoes are designed to grip the bottom of the pool providing a slip free environment that will allow you to add variety in your training plan and provides a cross training experience that can benefit anyone’s New Year’s resolution. This workout gives you the option to increase the intensity by simply increasing the number of reps of each exercise. *This workout usually takes 40 minutes

1. Warm-up: Deep water running for 5 minutes

2. Shallow Water Routine

* High knee skip
* Backwards skip (extend)
* Side shuffle with arm swings
* Carioca (also known as grapevine)
* Carioca with high knee across
* One legged ski jumps - Forward motion with side-to-side hops
* Tuck jumps
* Sprints* (make sure proper sprinting mechanics are used)
* *Alternate: Partner sprints - Partner sprints are great for added resistance and can be used for over-speed training - Partner places hands on the upper chest as the other partner sprints against the resistance
* 45 degree angle sprints - Start at shallow end of the pool and turn and sprint towards the deep end at a 45 degree angle
* Alternate leg split squats

3. Deep Water Routine

* Cross Country Ski
* Alternate leg toe touches

4. Pamela is an inline indoor short track speed skater and teaches water training classes at her local pool. “If it were up to me everyone would be training in AQx shoes as the results are measurable as I've proven to myself in my skates. With the AQx shoes assisting the work in the water my feet 'turn over' on land more quickly as necessary in skating.”

Pamela, who trains in her AQx shoes three to four times a week, has enjoyed many successes in her career as a speed skater which began at age 40. The one that shocked her the most was her gold medal in the National Veteran 2 Lady Relay in 2006. “I hadn't planned on competing at all that year when my team mate asked me to skate it with her and my coach, who knew more about my times than I did, urged me to…when we took gold I was pretty surprised…it was the best I’d ever skated.”

Pamela has been involved in many athletic activities throughout her life including basketball, baseball, spinning, water exercise, speed skating, and even powder-puff football. “I love MOVEMENT! Be it on a bike, skates, skis, sleds, I am moving every chance I can get.” She shares her love of athletics and movement with her two sons, one of which she enrolled in her first speed skating lessons with.

Pamela has lived in Michigan her whole life and for over 30 years was a business owner in Saint Clair, MI. At age 47, she moved to Warren, MI, where she is now an AEA certified Water Instructor and teaches classes with her AQx Aquatic Training Shoes. “They are superior in cushioning any landing I might do on deck during teaching while demonstrating,” says Pamela. Pamela has a busy schedule as she is also a certified USARS (speed coach teaching beginner inline speed skating classes) at SS2 Racing and a certified SPINNING Instructor.

“[I] wholeheartedly believe in the training methods Dr. Garry Killgore and his company utilizes.”

Thank you, Pamela and congratulations on all of your successes!

AQx Instructor Spotlight: Pauline Ivens

World Renowned Aquatic Fitness Specialist, Pauline Ivens, recently gave a workshop featuring AQx products in Cottonwood Heights, Utah at the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center. The 3-hour “Just Running” workshop was held on October 30th and included 30 water exercise instructors, all of which wore AQx Aquatic Training Shoes. Pauline is a full-time presenter and has 37 years of knowledge and experience in movement education. She travels nationally and internationally teaching and training water exercise instructors, as well as writing and designing new materials for water exercise education. Workshops like the one in Utah are typical of her training programs.

Pauline first learned of AQx in 2005, when a former classmate from the University of Oregon, Guido van Ryssegem (who is now on the AQx Advisory Board), told her that AQx is something she would be very interested in and she should contact Dr. Garry Killgore, President/Founder of AQx, right away. “I did!” says Pauline and now she has been an AQx Master Trainer for over four years. The most exciting part of AQx for Pauline is finally meeting and working with a Track & Field/Cross Country coach and professional educator who is adamant that all athletes should train in the water. “I cannot emphasize how important this is,” Pauline states, “and how exciting for a water exercise person like me!”

She is very excited to be actively taking part in connecting many athletes’ land-based and water-based training through her work with AQx and Dr. Killgore. “For the water exercise world this is a major step in the right direction. For many years we have not been able to consistently attract athletes into the water. I knew before I met Garry that we were not offering athletes the training specificity that they need. Now I have met a very knowledgeable professional educator who can provide us with the detailed technique to get those athletes into the water consistently.”

Pauline operates her own business, Aqua Aerobics Unlimited, and created her own educational workshop called “Just Running” which features AQx products and programs but is designed specifically for the water exercise professional to gain an understanding of the water techniques. “My main focus is to help our water exercise professionals understand the technique and be able to teach the technique, so that we can start water running classes/sessions in our pools.”

“I am only interested in products that are backed up with research, and provide training for the users,” says Pauline. “Garry and the team at AQx have worked extremely hard to produce a high quality shoe that really does what it is designed to do! The engineering detail is phenomenal. The water exercise world has never seen anything like this. Garry is both meticulous and generous. He shares every possible detail about the training programs, workout options, and fitness benefits. His ongoing research has brought new and innovative aquatic gear to the marketplace. The Zero Gravity suit is truly ‘innovative!’…The aquatic therapy world is also benefiting from Garry’s research. The water is well known as a suitable environment for injury rehabilitation. The AQx products have been able to add a new dimension to the healing outcomes for many clients.”

More about Pauline:

Pauline is from England. She grew up on the Isle of Wight (well known location mentioned in one of the Beatles songs) and was a local swimming champion! Her love of sports led to a career in Physical Education, and she taught for many years at a British secondary school. Pauline’s sense of adventure led her to the United States in 1984 when she did a Fulbright Teacher Exchange with a PE Teacher from Oregon. That very special year launched a whole new direction for Pauline’s life and career. She returned to Oregon in 1988 and started her Masters degree in Adapted Physical Education at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.

The university welcomed Pauline’s teaching skills, and she was immediately hired to teach a multitude of fitness classes, including aqua aerobics. She became the Program Coordinator for the Department of Physical Education and Human Movement Studies. Those were the wild days of high impact aerobics and the introduction of step training!

In 1990 Pauline added ‘adjunct faculty’ to her resume as she was invited to teach both undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation courses in elementary physical education at the university. Then in 1993 Pauline was offered the position of Director of Education at HYDRO-FIT Inc., and that shifted her career to a complete focus on water exercise.

It is now 21 years since that first day at U of O, and Pauline is still 100% passionate about movement education. She has become a nationally renowned presenter and instructor trainer in the water exercise branch of the fitness industry, is certified by AEA and ACE, and is a Training Specialist for the Aquatic Exercise Association. She is also a licensed NIA Teacher and Watsu Practitioner. Pauline is frequently published in AKWA and OnSite Fitness. In 1997 Pauline was awarded the Aquatic Fitness Professional Global Award for excellence in aquatic fitness leadership and education. She currently lives in Eureka, California.

“I am delighted to be a member of the AQx Team.”

Thank you Pauline! We are honored to have you!

An AQx Success Story: Kevin Clougherty

AQx recently received this testimonial from one of our many success stories, Kevin Clougherty. Kevin has been training with the AQx program at Pinnacle Health & Fitness in Fitchburg, Wisconsin with one of our terrific Master Trainers, Heidi Spidell. Here is his story:

"My name is Kevin Clougherty and I would like to share my own water running success story. I could not run more than a slow mile or two at most and on many days not even a quarter mile because of a past knee surgery.

I looked into the Pinnacle Health + Fitness deep-water running program with AQx sports master trainer Heidi Spidell as an alternative to land running. After a number of classes and individual training, I began to feel confident that I could run again. I went out to attempt a short run but actually ran 3 miles in 35 minutes without serious knee discomfort. I began training harder in the water. I went out running 2.5 miles with friends and this run included hills, again, no pain.

I then agreed to try a half marathon, fully realizing that I may be walking much of it but knowing I could go the distance. I ran the five miles of Crazy Legs first and had a successful run, averaging a 12-minute mile pace. I finished with no knee pain. Besides one 4-mile outdoor run just before the half marathon, I did the rest of my training in the water. I ran the entire race and finished in 2:30:00. With only minor knee pain and very minimal swelling, this was a very successful half marathon for me.

As a result of my continued water training, I feel confident that I have the ability to run forever. It is really nice to know that I can go for an occasional run with friends or do a fun run or race with my son if I really wanted to. Thanks to Heidi, AQx, and Pinnacle for making this possible."

Thank you Kevin for sharing your awesome experiences!

Intelligent Training: Just Add Water™

AQx Featured on Newscast in Sacramento, CA

AQx Sports was featured on a KCRA Channel 3 Newscast in Sacramento, California on July 29th, 2009. The attendees will learn to analyze proper form and technique of deep and shallow water running. Several related appropriate exercises for speed, power, and neuromuscular coordination incorporating plyometrics and medicine ball drills will be discussed that uniquely combine land and water training to optimize performance and rehabilitation opportunities and decrease the likelihood of incurring injuries. In conjunction, relevant scientific principles as they apply in an aquatic environment will be discussed, e.g. buoyancy, drag, density, depth of water, anthropometric differences, shoes vs. barefoot, metabolic, physiological, and psychological effects, etc.

Intelligent Training...Just Add Water™

Washington State University Research Study

AQx Sports Inc. is happy to announce that Dr. Garry Killgore (Founder and President of AQx Sports Inc.) will be conducting a collaborative research study with Kasee Hildenbrand PhD ATC, program director of Washington State University's Athletic Training Department. This comparative study will focus on plyometrics on land versus in the water, as well as plyometrics in the water wearing our AQx Aquatic Training Shoes versus bare feet. The study will be conducted this academic year (September 2009 to June 2010) and is estimated to include 40 to 60 subjects throughout a twelve-week protocol. This study is the first of it's kind for water-based plyometrics with shoes.
